Japan’s household spending fell 3.3% year-on-year in June 2026, a sharper decline than the 0.4% drop recorded in May and contrary to market expectations of a 1.0% increase. This marked the seventh consecutive month of contraction and the steepest decline in the current downturn, highlighting ongoing weakness in consumer demand.

Expenditure declined across several key categories: food (-2.5% vs +2.4% in May), utilities (-7.1% vs -7.6%), furniture and household goods (-11.4% vs +23.0%), clothing (-19.9% vs +4.0%), and transport and communication (-5.7% vs -15.8%).

Spending growth slowed in healthcare (up 1.4% vs 3.3% in May) and education (up 20.6% vs 21.7%). By contrast, housing expenditure accelerated (up 3.6% vs 0.7%), while spending on culture and recreation returned to growth, rising 0.4% after a 3.1% decline in May.

On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, household spending dropped 6.4% in June, reversing a 3.7% increase in May and far exceeding expectations for a 3.1% decline. This was the first monthly decrease since March and the steepest fall since January 2021.
